In May of 2003, the Rivers of Life program brought together a crew of seven students to learn on, and teach about, the Mississippi River. Students from schools in Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN, Neuss, Germany, and Browns Town, Jamaica met on the river for an eight-day immersion experience in river education. The students spent four days in training--as learners, investigating their relationship with the river and the watershed. This was followed by five days during which the students acted as assistant instructors, working with scientists, naturalists, musicians, storytellers and other educators to teach about the river.

From May 12-16, more than 400 K-12 students from the Cannon River Watershed traveled to the Mississippi River for one-day interdisciplinary investigations into their relationships to the river. They were instucted by the Rivers of Life students and a team of geologists, naturalists, hydrologists, Native American elders, musicians, storytellers, birders, river pilots and other content specialists to explore the river.

With a shared vision to raise awareness and build a constituency of stewardship for the Cannon River Watershed, the Cannon River and the Mississippi River, the Red Wing Environmental Learning Center, Cannon River Watershed Partnership, Audubon – Upper Mississippi River Campaign and Hamline University – Center for Global Environmental Education, came together to explore ways to collaborate on river education and programming. By sharing expertise and pooling resources their combined energies have developed a model river education project: the Audubon Ark: Cannon River/Mississippi Adventure.
